Encouragement Can Make All The Difference

One day while Jim Newton was visiting with Thomas Edison, he asked the great inventor how he and Henry Ford had first become friends. Here is the story.

Thomas Edison -- “Oh, that was some thirty years ago at an annual convention of our Edison Illuminating Company. We met at Manhattan Beach, outside of New York. When we sat down at dinner, Alex Dow, the head of the Detroit company, said to me, “Over there’s a young fellow who made a gas car.” That interested me because I was giving thoughts to the improvement of the electric car by designing a new type of battery. I had him come over and sit next to me and quizzed him. He drew sketches for me and I was very impressed. I told him to keep at it. And he did.”

After Jim Newton got to know Henry Ford, he asked him if he remembered that event and his eyes lit up.

Henry Ford – I should say I remember the day. It was a turning point for me. Mr. Edison listened to me very patiently. Then he banged a fist on the table and said, “Young man, that’s the thing. Your car is self-contained, no boiler, no heavy battery, no smoke or steam.”

“Keep at it”

“You can imagine how excited I was — the man who knew most about electricity in the world — my boyhood idol — telling me my car was better than an electric car!

He was the first to give me real encouragement that my dream would work!

Well, that boyhood idol became my manhood friend.” That single act of encouragement was all that Henry Ford needed to becoming one of the wealthiest men in America.
